Perry is a Chicago native who was born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. She was not allowed to perform in front of her family until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the anxiety it could cause. Perry says she didn't want to perform in high school, but she decided to begin acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry back to California, where theater jobs were in demand. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie together with her in the year 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Her father portrayed her in The ABC Drama Scandal. The actress was also featured on her role on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite having a connection to this persona.
